Before You Go
Home > About Us > Before You Go

This page is a list of things to consider before leaving on your trip.

  • You may like to do your food shopping before you go. There is a Bi-Lo in Kingscote which is reasonable, but there are only small general stores in Penneshaw and Parndana (the closest town to Middle River Lookout). Taking your shopping does take car space but arriving at the house and then leaving to do the shopping is very time consuming.

  • Please note that it is against state legislation to bring honey onto the Island. Potatoes brought to the Island must be in new packaging. Vine cuttings and soil in which grapevines have been grown are also not permitted on the Island unless they have been inspected and approved. Help protect Kangaroo Island by washing vehicles, trailers, footwear etc. Foxes and rabbits are also prohibited.

  • The house phone cannot be used to make calls to the mainland. If you would like to call the mainland, interstate or internationally, buy a Telstra PhoneAway Card or similar from a post office. Mobile phone coverage only exists on the Telstra Next G network. If you are on the standard Telstra GSM network the nearest area of strong coverage is approximately 20km east near Kingscote. Other cariers may have different or no coverage at all on the island.

  • Bring a good map of the island. One of the best maps is the CFS map book for Kangaroo Island. It costs $29.95 and is available from many places including The Map Shop on Hindley Street, Adelaide. There are directions to the house on our website here, including a downloadable PDF.

  • Ensure you pack your own linen if you do not wish to pay for linen to be provided. Quilts are provided.

  • You may also like to pack your favourite DVDs, camera and film.
